On “Jumping the Shark,” What Often Gets Overlooked

What often gets overlooked — regarding the jumping of sharks, in general, and, specifically, that moment in the fifth season of Happy Days when Arthur Fonzarelli literally jumps over a shark — what often gets overlooked is that the jumping of a shark is the perfect expression of human potential, one rendered even more beautiful because, and not in spite, of its absurdity.

Were Happy Days to have begun with this episode, it would have been a better program. Were men to begin their lives by jumping sharks, proverbial or otherwise, they would be better men.
