Annual Recommendation from the Performance Poetry Society of America

The Performance Poetry Society of America (PPSA) has issued its annual report with recommendations for “the use of performance to enhance the aesthetic impact of poetry,” and it’s two words long: Hammer Dance. “There’s a reason Hammer’s magic on the mic,” PPSA president Donald Hall contends. “He’s dope on the floor. He does that Hammer Dance. You do that and declaim verse? Sublime.” The PPSA website has detailed instructions on the dance’s steps, as well as preliminary warm-ups to prevent injury. “I’m 84 and I do it,” Hall notes. “It’s been Hammer Time at my readings for a couple years now. Keeps me young.”
